Our Story: From Apprentice to Trusted Southeast Missouri Contractor

🔧 Where It All Started

I was raised around entrepreneurial, self-employed parents and grandparents. After my father was tragically killed in a plane accident in 1986, some family friends in Fredericktown, Missouri, invited me to apprentice with them as a home builder. That experience lit a fire in me to build, fix, and create.

In high school, I took every shop and drafting class I could and enrolled in a two-year trade program for electrical wiring. After graduating in 1991, I took my first electrician job in St. Louis.

💡 Launching Owens Electric

In 1992, I moved to Cape Girardeau and realized I wasn’t meant to work for someone else. I went to the local building department, obtained my electrical license, and launched Owens Electric.

My first jobs were at the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport and commercial projects around the state. A friend and fellow contractor helped me land maintenance and electrical work for nursing home expansions across Missouri.

📦 Building in Poplar Bluff

In 1993, I moved to Poplar Bluff to get married. Finding local work was tough at first, but I worked with other electricians in Poplar Bluff, while working on the side to earn trust and build my own brand in the area.

In 2001, an injury on the job pushed me to explore other options. I joined Drury Inn as a maintenance technician — and that’s where I was introduced to HVAC.

❄️ A New Direction: HVAC and Project Management

By 2004, I was working at Lucy Lee Hospital (now Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center). I managed electrical systems and gained hands-on experience with chillers, refrigeration, kitchen equipment, and more. I eventually became project manager for major in-house construction projects — including cath labs, remodels, and a 20,000 sq ft office building.

It was during this time I earned my Master Electrician license.

🏛 From City Inspector to Business Owner

In 2008, I was hired by the City of Poplar Bluff as a building inspector. I helped launch their HVAC/Mechanical licensing program. But by 2011, I knew the office wasn’t for me.

So on August 15, 2011, I founded Power Plus! Electric & HVAC — and never looked back.

🏢 Big Projects, Big Momentum

In 2012, I started working with a commercial investor who owned Mansion Mall and Valley Plaza. After some initial maintenance work, I was invited to bid on my first big project: Goodwill at Mansion Mall.

🔥 HVAC Grows with Demand

Though I tried to stay focused on electrical work, customers kept asking about HVAC services. In 2019, I officially began offering residential and commercial HVAC service. Since then, we’ve maintained systems for dozens of businesses across Southeast Missouri.

👨‍👦 A Family Business

In 2014, my son Evan joined as an apprentice. He’s now a licensed Journeyman Electrician and growing HVAC tech. He’s sharp, dependable, and great with conduit work and troubleshooting.

In 2019, AJ joined the team and is on his own path to becoming another skilled and trusted electrician.
